Fill in default responses by URL parameter

Fill in default responses by URL parameter. A URL parameter is the final part of the link which you can customize for your own use. You can add on your own ending so that a specific answer is chosen for a question that you can specify.

NOTE

Filling in answers by default using URL parameters will only work for the following question types:

  • Text Choice
  • Image Choice
  • Text Slider
  • Numeric slider
  • NPS

This guide will teach you:

  1. Activate feature
  2. Formatting the suffix

1. Activate feature

Before sending out your survey with default responses included in the URL, make sure to enable this feature. Go to the Extra Options tab and click Fill in default responses by URL parameter. Now toggle on the feature.

There you will also find the option to Hide questions that are filled by URL parameter. By default, the questions are shown, but toggle to hide all questions that are automatically filled in so respondents will not see them at all.

2. Formatting the suffix

You will need to add the following ending to the survey link: /suffix?qx=y replacing suffix with your survey's suffix, replacing the x with your question number, and replacing the with the position number of the answer option as it is entered into the editor.

The image below shows how to find the x and y value - for the x value, you'll need to write the question number, found at the top of each question, and use the position number of the answer for the y value. In this example, we want to the option HR to be automatically selected, so we'll need to take 3 as the y value. So the link in this example would be /suffix?q2=3

WARNING

It is important to be aware that you MUST use the answer numbers rather than the actual answer text. So using the  /suffix?qx="HR" does not work.

You can use this feature in combination with the randomization of questions and answers.

Continuing with the example from above, the entire survey link, including the /suffix?q2=3 will be:

pointerpro link

This is how the question will appear to respondents:

tip
TIP

Although the answer is filled in by default, it is still possible for respondents to change or update the selected answer.

Note that when multiple answers are possible, URL parameters will not be supported. Also, if the same question is written twice in the link, the last value will be used.

What if you want to have a few questions filled in automatically? That's no problem! We use the same basic rules  and simply add an & sign between each question, for example: su.vc/suffix?q1=2&q2=3&q3=5

What's next?

  • Question logic is a highly effective way to improve the flow of your survey and tailor it to make it relevant to respondents. It allows you to specify which question to show or hide, or even skip to the end of the survey, based on the answer to a preceding inquiry, quiz score, or contact data.
  • Outcomes is a feature that allows you to select what you will show to your respondents as a final screen, based on their answers or show a screen based on criteria that you have specified, such as a specific quiz score. It offers the possibility to create personality quizzes and business tests that end with personalised advice based on the respondent's answers.
  • Auto Skip will automatically slide to the next slide once the answer has been selected by the respondent, so it helps them progress smoothly through the survey. You can also choose if you want to have respondents click "Complete to finish the survey or if it will automatically complete once the final question has been answered.
